The Real Skill That Separates Designers Who Thrive With AI

Most people think the designers who thrive with AI are the most creative or the most technical.

Unfortunately, They’re not.

The ones pulling ahead are the ones who can think clearly, break ideas into structure, and communicate exactly what they mean.

Because AI responds better to clarity than taste, and design is more than aesthetics.

I noticed something in my workflow after I started working with AI.

No matter how much visual reference you give, screenshots, SVGs, detailed instructions , there’s no guarantee you’ll get a pixel-perfect result. Even clear descriptions don’t always land the way you expect.

At first, it’s easy to think: “AI just isn’t that good yet.”

But that’s not the problem.

The real issue is us.

AI doesn’t see the way we do. - It reads. - It interprets. - It works with structure and constraints.

So when you give it a design, it’s not copying what you see , it’s reconstructing what you mean, within its own constraints.

And those constraints matter:

  • Screen sizes
  • Responsiveness
  • Layout rules
  • Context of use
  • Emotion
  • Brand voice
  • Conversion goals

So the system is constantly asking:

“How should this behave?”

If you don’t answer that clearly, it fills in the gaps.

That’s where things start going wrong.

MCPs Help, But They Don’t Solve the Real Problem

MCPs make AI more useful by connecting it to tools, systems, and structured sources of truth. When AI can access a component library or design system, results usually improve, less guessing, more consistency.

But MCPs don’t change the core limitation.

AI still doesn’t see. It interprets.

Even with MCPs, output quality still depends on input clarity.

If you ask AI to add a new section to a landing page, access to your design system helps. It might know your components, spacing tokens, and patterns.

But it still needs you to define:

  • What the section is for
  • Where it sits in the hierarchy
  • How it behaves across screen sizes
  • What outcome it should drive

MCPs reduce guesswork. They improve context. They speed up execution.

But they don’t replace clarity.

If your instruction is vague, the output will be too.

And this isn’t new.

AI didn’t create this problem, it exposed it.

This Problem Didn’t Start with AI

Humans have never been particularly good at visual communication.

We were never really taught how to describe what we see. We rely on intuition, trial and error, and back-and-forth with designers or engineers.

I explored this more in Some Virtues of Design (My Modern Take), but the core issue is simple:

We’ve always struggled to clearly say what we mean.

AI just makes that obvious.

Because now, if your instruction is unclear, the system breaks.

Vocabulary Is Not Enough, Clarity Is

Before AI, being able to explain your design was optional.

Now, it’s a core skill.

But it’s not just about knowing design terms. It’s about decision clarity + vocabulary + intent.

You can say:

“Increase padding to 24px” — That’s clear, but not necessarily useful.

Or you can say:

“Increase padding to 24px to improve readability and hierarchy on mobile” — Now you’re thinking in systems.

That difference is everything.

The Job Has Changed

Designers don’t just design anymore.

They:

  • Translate what’s in their head
  • Translate what’s in a reference
  • Break it into structure
  • Communicate it clearly

Even something as simple as adjusting padding isn’t always simple.

It’s not just:

“Reduce padding to 24px”

You also need to define:

  • Is spacing fixed or flexible?
  • Should the layout adapt or stay locked?

Those decisions completely change the outcome.

Most Designers Skip This (And It Shows)

We use tools like Figma every day.

But let’s be honest:

  • We click
  • We drag
  • We adjust

And we don’t always know what those actions are called.

Some use auto layout but can’t explain it. Some adjust spacing but don’t think in systems. Some group elements but don’t understand structure.

These are foundational gaps.

What You Can Start Doing

1. Learn the names of things If you don’t know the term, you can’t give the instruction.

2. Stop describing vibes — describe structure Say what it is, not just how it feels.

3. Think beyond the static screen Define behavior. What happens when things change?

4. Use precise language Words like padding, grid, radius, constraints — they give you control.

5. Improve how you give feedback “This isn’t right” is useless. Specific feedback speeds everything up.

Design is no longer just visual. It’s structural. It’s logical. It’s contextual.

And now, it has to be explainable.
