UX researchers are human. Naturally, we’re also susceptible to everyday human biases. But unlike everyday situations, our work doesn’t allow these biases to slip by unnoticed. A small bias can multiply into a major distortion in insights, design decisions, and eventually, product success.

A bias is a tendency, inclination, or subconscious prejudice toward or against something or someone. Because of this, a UX researcher’s analysis and recommendations must remain objective. We must do the work of ensuring our research is clean, thorough, and free from the influence of our personal preferences.

It’s also important for us as UX researchers to stay open-minded. New information surfaces quickly during studies, and we can easily miss key insights if we aren’t paying attention objectively.

To conduct research successfully and without personal bias, we first need to be aware of the common biases that can sneak into our process. Humans can have up to 188 different types of biases (according to some source). But for the sake of this article, we’ll focus on 8 major ones that you and I are very susceptible to. Being aware of them helps you conduct more ethical, reliable research.

Becoming more aware of these biases makes our work more reliable, more ethical, and more impactful.

1. Confirmation Bias

Confirmation bias shows up when we look for information that proves what we already believe. It can make researchers ask questions that subtly steer users, or avoid asking questions that might contradict our assumptions.

As a designer myself, I’ve been there. Sometimes I’m convinced a feature is a brilliant idea. But I’ve learned not to get too excited when a participant validates my assumption, or too discouraged when they don’t like it. It’s all part of the process.

How to avoid it

  • Write neutral research questions; avoid leading language or emotional framing.
  • Have another researcher or designer review your plan for hidden assumptions.
  • Actively document insights that challenge your original hypothesis.

2. Leading Question Bias

Humans are easily nudged. Leading questions subtly push users toward a particular answer or mental frame. When your questions sound like they want a specific answer, users will feel pressured to provide it.

Example:

❌ “Did you find the checkout button easy to use?”

✔️ “How was the checkout experience?”

How to avoid it

  • Ask open, neutral questions.
  • Test your interview script with someone not involved in the project.
  • Watch your tone; even your voice can guide answers unintentionally.

3. Recency Bias

Our brains remember recent experiences more vividly. This can cause us to focus heavily on new feedback while overlooking earlier insights, whether within the same session or across multiple interviews.

How to avoid it

  • Take structured notes during the session.
  • Record the session (with participant consent).
  • Encourage users to think aloud; it captures real-time insights.

4. Implicit Bias

Implicit bias is the set of subconscious attitudes or stereotypes we hold about certain groups; race, gender, education level, social status, sexual orientation, etc. These biases can silently influence how we interpret participants’ behaviors or responses.

How to avoid it

  • Identify your biases intentionally; write them out.
  • Anchor yourself in your professional role: be objective, not judgmental.
  • Use standardized research frameworks (like discussion guides, scoring rubrics, and structured observation methods) to keep your evaluations consistent and less influenced by personal perception.

5. False Consensus Bias

This one is very common among designers. We assume users think the way we do. We expect them to “just understand” certain things because we do. But users aren’t trying to appreciate our craft; they simply want to solve their problems quickly and without friction.

How to avoid it

  • Always validate assumptions with actual users.
  • Bring non-designers into brainstorming; engineers and support teams see things differently.
  • Keep raw user quotes visible in your workflow; they keep the team grounded.

6. Sampling Bias

Sampling bias happens when your research participants don’t represent your real users. Your findings might feel accurate, but they won’t scale. Testing with colleagues, friends, or family who don’t match your target persona isn’t user research.

How to avoid it

  • Define your target user segments before recruiting.
  • Recruit across diverse demographics, behaviors, and abilities.
  • Document who you didn’t speak to — this reveals blind spots.

7. Social Desirability Bias

Humans, like You and I, like to seem smart, capable, and agreeable. Because of this, participants may give answers they think you want to hear instead of their true thoughts. One key skill of a good researcher is framing questions in ways that allow honesty.

How to avoid it

  • Remind participants there are no right or wrong answers.
  • Make them comfortable; be casual, be human.
  • Use indirect questioning (e.g., “What do you think someone like you might do here?”).

8. Question Order Bias

Question order bias happens when the sequence of your questions, or the order of answer options, influences how users respond. Early questions can unintentionally frame the participant’s thinking and shape how they answer later ones. Sometimes you’ll even see inconsistent responses simply because earlier questions primed users in a particular direction. It’s subtle, but it can distort your findings quickly if not managed well.

How to avoid it

  • Group similar questions together to maintain a natural flow and avoid unnecessary priming.
  • Randomize answer options so users aren’t swayed by the first or most prominent choice.
  • Pilot-test your survey or script with a small group first; this helps reveal points where the question order influences responses more than it should.

9. Sunk Cost Bias

The sunk cost bias is emotional. When we’ve spent time or effort on an idea, we want to protect it. Even when evidence shows the idea isn’t working, we try to justify keeping it alive. Designers and other team members often fall into this trap without realizing it.

How to avoid it

  • Separate research findings from solution conversations.
  • Celebrate evidence that prevents wasted effort — not just evidence that supports existing work.
  • Run design reviews focused on user needs, not feature survival.

A Quick Tip

Avoid research bias by listening more than you talk. Pay attention to your user body language. Let participants express themselves openly, and if you need clarification, simply ask, “Why do you think so?”

Learn to mask emotional reactions so participants feel safe to express their true feelings about the product or experience.

Biases are natural; we can’t eliminate them. But we can minimize their impact. One way is to complement interviews is with surveys, observational studies, and heat maps. These other UX methodologies give you a clearer picture of how people actually use your product and what errors they fall into. They validate, challenge, or expand on the insights you’ve already collected.
